Presented by  NorthCountry Federal Credit Union, the 2011 festival includes fun  activities for all ages, including the Vermont Snow Sculpting Competition, the Church Street Ice Walk, kids activities, live  performances, art exhibits, special merchant promotions, and more!

There will also be dog sled rides at the waterfront and a  Family Activity Expo at the ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center.  Other exciting activities include the Special Olympics Vermont Penguin  Plunge at the waterfront and Kids VT Camp and School Fair at the Hilton.

Dating back to 1993, the festival attracts thousands of people who  come to participate in Burlington’s revelry of snow and ice. Since  2007, service learning students from UVM’s Community Development &  Applied Economics Department have partnered with Burlington’s  Department of Parks and Recreation and the Church Street Marketplace  to produce this fun community event.

SNOW SCULPTING COMPETITION

It was a great day at the Burlington Winter Festival on February 6! Lots of great performances, activities, and, of course, the ice carvings. The NorthCountry Ice Throne was a big hit.

All of the competition pieces were beautiful examples of the art of ice carving. The carvers worked into the wee hours on Thursday and Friday nights to create four stunning pieces.

The State Competition winners were Frank Barsalow, Sean Rodgers, and Katya Andrievskaya with their whimsical “Party Penguins.” The piece also won the people’s choice award.

Second Place went to Leslie Baker, Alex Dostie, and Jeremy Dostie for “Origination.”

Congratulations to all the teams!

Thank you to all the volunteers, sponsors, and partners who helped make the festival possible. And  a very special thank you to the student organizing team; Ron, Pat, and Mimi from the Church Street Marketplace; and Nancy and her Parks & Rec crew!

Don’t worry though there will be lots of fun activities in City Hall including face painting, arts and crafts and Radio Disney will be there with games, music and lots of fun!!! The Burton Chill Foundation will also be there with activities for kids and will be raffling off a Burton Backpack signed by all the Burton Riders!

With so many activities going on in our great city during the summer months, it is no wonder that the Burlington Winter Festival is an important piece of our community. Reminding us of our ties to one another, as well as the incredible landscape we are lucky enough to call our home during the long winter months.

We may be braving the cold, but we’re still having fun. February 6th we’ll be enjoying performances from University of Vermont clubs such as the UVM Top Cats, the Orchasis Dance Company and more.  Head inside City Hall to warm up and listen to the family friendly band, the Bosnian Lillies, as well as enjoy face painting and other kids arts and crafts activities. Radio Disney will also be in City Hall with games, music and fun!

Do all of this with some great blues in the background, as you head up Church Street to view the incredible work of this years Ice Carvers and Snow Sculptors.
